Trump: Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me...

According to contemporaneous notes taken by the acting AG's deputy in late 2020...

In the absence of an investigation and/or proof, former President Trump ordered the acting AG, Jeffrey Rosen, to "just say the election was corrupt" as part of his frantic efforts to overturn the election.

"In one conversation in late December, according to the written account, acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen told Trump the Justice Department “can’t + won’t snap its fingers + change the outcome of the election.”

The president replied that he understood that, but wanted the agency to “just say the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me and the R. Congressmen,” according to notes of the conversation taken by another senior Justice Department official, Richard Donoghue."

A couple of things I wonder...

How would the right have reacted if Obama had tried to do this?

Does this merit another criminal investigation into Trump? If not, shouldn't it?

Speaking to the Justice Department on Dec. 27, 2020. Conversation memorialized in then-acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue’s contemporaneous notes.

Just for starters meeting notes are not on the record testimony.

To me this sounds like the Georgia BS all over again and out of context because Trump was very much convinced of election fraud (So am I BTW and many Americans with good reason). That it could be proven and overturn the election I concede is another matter. So nobody is being asked to lie and never was.

And once again your TDS is showing!

How many failed Smoking Gun evidence do we need before the Trump obsessed give up?

Trump is so crooked. I’m constantly amazed at how his worshippers can’t see that.

Could you please post the entire context of that note? What was the general conversation before that comment? Had the DOJ already verbally agreed that the election was corrupt?

    Nobody worships Trump.

But, the anti-intellectual cult that's risen among those who can't seem to understand that he's no longer president is concerning.

Thanks. That's really interesting. According to the guy's notes, Trump said "We have an obligation to tell people that this was an illegal, corrupt election."

If those notes are to be believed, it appears Trump actually believed--as many do--that the election was corrupt. But, he didn't order the DOJ to say that and then follow up with "Leave the rest to me."

I wish I could decipher more of the note. The handwriting is barely legible, which isn't a surprise when someone is taking real-time notes by hand.

Let me ask you a question -- it's hypothetical, but I think it's valuable. Suppose, just suppose for one minute that Trump was correct and the election was rigged, via Dominion or whatever. If that happened, would he have an obligation to tell us? Would Americans be obligated to protest the results?

Here's why I ask -- whether or not the election was rigged, a whole lot of Americans think it was. That puts them in the unenviable position of having to stand up and speak-out about the results.

We have so little trust in our government these days, and with the incredible advances in technology, thanks to Snowden and others, we know that technology is being used in ways that infringe on our rights.

As for me, the verdict is out on the election. I think Trump alienated a lot of Americans with his response to the pandemic, but I also wonder about some of the counts that "flipped" on election night. And, my son is the Director of IT at a university. His department constantly defends against ransomware attacks and other types of attempted breaches. He's explained on more than one occasion how a program can be written to accomplish something and hide itself at the same time. That's why many companies pay ransomware but never discover where the money went or who hacked the system.

I'm not dumb enough to think there is no possibility of a technological ruse that took place on election day. I do think Congress needs to order a full investigation. And, then, of course, we need to secure our voting system, probably going back to paper and pencil, in order to maintain integrity.

This thread and the story linked thereto are pretty interesting. Author of the Mega-Viral Thread on MAGA Voters, Darryl Cooper, Explains His Thinking (thepoliticalforums.com) It helps explain how and why some supporters believe that the election was fraudulent and have lost faith in the institutions of authority.
