Cool Is water always the best choice on a hot day?...

Is water always the best choice on a hot day?...

Water makes up more than half of our body weight. To sustain this amount of water in our bodies, we're advised to drink six to eight glasses of fluid per day. Water is the healthiest drink we can reach for – no sugar, no calories – but is it always the best way to rehydrate on hot days? The answer is: it depends. It seems water is sufficient for most people most of the time, but the best way to rehydrate depends on who and where you are, and what you're doing.

"The needs of a physically active person with an outdoor job on a hot day may be different from the person who lives in an air-conditioned house, who drives an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned office," says Ron Maughan, professor at St Andrews University's School of Medicine. The obvious answer is that the active person will need to drink more fluid than the sedentary one – but there's more to it than that.

When out in the sun we should do as the British sailors did up until WW2, drink lots of water mixed with lime juice and a healthy dollop of rum.

For the record this is "Grog" and the origin of the label "Limeys" for the British. It was established because the water was so bad on the ships the sailors were not drinking it. Since sailors will drink anything with alcohol in it they mixed the rum with the water and lime juice to make it more palatable. It also had the added benefit of helping to prevent scurvy.

So that is at least two mixed drinks the British have give us with medicinal origins, the other being the gin and tonic as a preventative against malaria.

I think the biggest problem is that people think they can guzzle water.

Drink a little at a time and often. Lots of places I go used to provide salt tablets.
It gets a little hot when you are melting things.
