Old people play The Last of Us

I just saw this and thought it was adorable! This is a bunch of old people playing the opening chapter of the modern classic survival-horror adventure video game The Last of Us, which (along with the sequel) happens to be among my all-time faves. It was the overall Game of the Year award-winner for 2013 and the sequel, released last year, won the most Game of the Year awards of any video game in history. Anyway, here's a bunch of old people playing the opening chapter of the first game.

I just love how NONE of them can tell the difference between a cinema scene and an interactive part. More than once it happens that the camera pans behind the player character and ALL of them, in their respective plays, do nothing. The player character just stands there forever until eventually they guy showing them the game tells them they have to use the controller now.

Also, just so many endearing remarks. "Typical family sitcom", remarks one of them early on. "I guess it's her boyfriend", another somehow initially concludes of Joel, who is in fact Sarah's father. One hypothesizes that everything happening after Sarah falls asleep is a dream. They complain about the foul language because the apocalypse is no excuse for swearing. "I go to the right, there is a zombie. I go to the left, there is a zombie", one guy laments in frustration. It's so cute to see how a different generation responds to modern gaming.

It's also really refreshing to see how deeply people who don't play modern video games much, if any at all, get so emotionally attached to the characters so quickly and instinctively and seem genuinely shocked by loud noises, horrified when someone is injured or lost, and just generally really enthusiastic about everything. They respond strongly to most stuff that happens. Like more strongly than I think most hardcore gamers probably would. It's really endearing to watch. And they liked the game! I hope it motivated them to try more games out because console gaming needs more participants in this age bracket. I mean I'd like to see people over the age or 40 or 45 around gaming forums and stuff. I think the perspective of an older generation would be refreshing in general, like this is!
