Exclamation Two basketball coaches are charged with murder after a teen dies at practice...

    Murder? Negligence, sure. Murder?

Two basketball coaches are charged with murder after a teen dies at practice... August 13 will mark two years since Imani Bell died following an outdoor high school basketball practice in extreme heat.

A grand jury in Clayton County recently returned an indictment charging two coaches with murder for the 16-year-old Clayton County student and basketball player's death.

The indictment charges Larosa Maria Walker-Asekere and Dwight Broom Palmer with second-degree murder, second-degree child cruelty, involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. Asekere and Palmer were arrested in July following an issued indictment. They were both released on a $75,000 bond.

Tragic. We had a kid pass out at soccer practice once but we , including he, didn't have a clue how serious that could have been.
But it feels like the term murder is being thrown around pretty loosley these days. How about reckless endangerment or something like that?

I'm surprised they weren't making them practice in masks.

They made the student run up the stadium steps when the temperature was over 100 degrees and while she was showing visible signs of heat exhaustion. That's criminally negligent.

    I agree.

It seems negligent - not intentionally murderous.

I believe that the involuntary manslaughter charge would apply. According to Georgia law, that is the applicable charge for death that results due to an act of recklessness or criminal negligence.

Just out of curiosity I checked the weather that day in nearby Atlanta thinking the 100 degrees was exaggeration. The high was 99 degrees that day. It was stupid to even have outside practice. It probably felt 30 degrees warmer on the asphalt court.
It was the first day for one of the defendants. She may have some defense. It also says that she (coach) was 8 months pregnant so you have to wonder what she was even doing out there.

If that were the culprit it would be deemed an acceptible loss for the good of the hive. I have spoken with a young lady around 15 friend of my grandson who did have to play school basket ball with a mask and she said it was very difficult. The use of our youth as shields for the adults is a terrible sign for our society.

    It was 2019.

In 2020 she would have been put down as a COVID death.
