If you needed another reason to ditch bottled water and turn on the tap, a new study shows that it's 3,500 times more harmful for the environment than tap water. This number comes from assessing everything from extracting the raw materials (to make the bottles) to manufacturing, distribution, transport, usage, and disposal. The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) focused on bottled water usage in Barcelona, Spain, and gives one more reason to stop relying on bottled water.

In the study published in Science Direct, researchers showed that just making the bottle requires three times the amount as the bottle actually holds. By studying Barcelona, where 60% of the population drinks bottled water, they were able to uncover some incredible information. In fact, they discovered that if the entire population switched to drinking bottled water, the production that would be necessary would kill 1.43 species a year and it would cost about $83.9 million to extract the raw materials. Additionally, there would be 1,400 times more impact to ecosystems and 3,500 times higher cost of resource extraction.

Well, I can't really argue. You are right more or less right with the 3,500 number. And whether it is actually 1,873 or 4,217 it is still a high number.

But some of the tap water is pretty filthy. Some parts of the USA are drinking recycled human waste.

Here are the photos of what is in a gallon of tap water across much of the USA...

    Counter argument?

    2500 X .000000000001 for tap water?

The bottles are certainly a issue. But if I fly into a town, then I get a 12 pack of water for the room and time in the car.
That water replaces diet soda or Iced Tea at the gas station in another bottle or was cup coated with wax and a plastic lid and straw. So health wise the bottled water is certainly a better choice.

It also replaces tap water that I would drink in the room that is often heavily chemically treated. Rarely have I have been to areas where the tap water is actually tasteless, like it should be.

I consider myself 'light green', which means I do my best to not impact the environment within reason.

I use re-useable water bottles, but have recently found out even though a plastic ree-usable bottle may be PBA free, there are other nasties to consider. We have a RO water filtration system in the house for drinking/cooking water. Yes, it uses extra gallons to create a gallon of drinkable water, but we are on a well/septic, so waste water leaches back into the earth.

That doesn't mean I don't buy a bottle of water when needed, or items packaged in plastic. It means I try to not purchase things packaged in excess plastic, use plastic grocery bags, or those extra produce bags. And when it's unavoidable, I recycle everything I can.

Just be careful of which bottled water you do drink. Several of them 'add minerals for taste' but don't tell you what or how much. Dasani is one of them, and I had to call and drag the information out of them. They add so much potassium it's about a weeks work in one bottle... what that does is make you more thirsty.... and can (and did to me) throw of your body's balance between potassium and magnesium.

We run all the drinking water in the house through a Big Berkey. I could dump water straight from the Rio Grande into it and get good, clean, pure water.

Have you ever noticed how hispanics are far more obsessed with bottled water than most Americans?

Granted where they come from I get it!
