We don't hear many stories like this in SoCal, but they do go on about Japanese Internment under FDR.
Many in the Japanese WWII Military were brutal people and why we dropped bombs instead of invading Japan on some beachhead. The loss of lives both sides would have been horrific!
I don't think the US would ever have had to invade Japan. They were beaten, their navy was all but gone. We dropped the bombs to let the world know the US was now a superpower.
The Japanese Imperial council was deadlocked on surrender before and after the bombs. The Emperor broke the stalemate and agreed to subordinate himself to General MacArthur. The Russian invasion of Manchuria was the big event that caused this. Not the US bombs.
