    Anidea about citing another's posts...

I'm not going to say which thread this happened in, but earlier, a poster was thread-banned because he snipped out a bit of my post when he responded to me.

I've seen that happen before, but I've also taken part in that, and I wish that wasn't considered to be "altering" the post of another.

Sometime's posters make incredibly long posts and if you want to respond, you have to Reply to the entire thing. I think that can be confusing. At least it is to me.

Anyway, I think it should be okay to respectfully snip out parts of a poster's post to specify the focus of the response.

For example -- cutting out extraneous parts but leaving in an entire sentence. Would that be okay?

Sometimes, I will embolden certain words and then respond just to them, but I never know if the other poster really knows what I'm doing.

I mean, as long as we don't change the wording--wouldn't that be okay? I only ask because I was really looking forward to engaging the thread-banned poster in more debate on the subject. What do others think?

I've gotten in trouble altering someone's post, but never for quoting verbatim. That's just silly.

I have done that. If you are just responding to a single line of a post that may look more like a book then it only makes sense.

If you are acting like NBC and actually editing the sentences then that is a definite violation.

Let's face it we have some people here that are trying to sell books in their lengthy posts. Go to this commercial sites and buy these books that I recommend.

There must have been more to it than just filtering out pats of a comment.

The basic rule is this: Don't alter the meaning or content of a post. If you snip, indicate it with an ellipsis (...) or something like "<snip>." Anyway, the point is don't alter the meaning.

I've usually noted 'edit by me for volume' or 'edit by me for specific point'. So far, it's been accepted. That way, other posters know that the entire original post exists elsewhere.

The idea is that you cannot change the meaning. For example, say I post:

This would also be in good faith and not change the meaning:

Someone edits in bad faith and changes the meaning if they do this, although I technically wrote all of these words:

Some members here like to right books. Often I comment only on one part of the tomb. Sometimes I bold what I am referring to, other times I delete what I am not referring too. I don't think that either of those methods violate the rules.

I often delete videos and graphs as reposting them is just spamming the forum.
