Science was the tool to understand.

Science has now become the tool to intimidate.

That scientists are the new priestly class is characteristic of liberal democracy and modern society generally. I can't pin this sort of thing on progressives if only because they are laughably inconsistent when it comes to "following the science".
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

True, but they seem to have been pioneers in this area and it helps define them and differentiate them from socialists, even though Marxism is also based on scientism, there, I think, a scientistic view of history.

Oh, for sure. I'm just saying that the centrality of science to the modern worldview is the legacy of liberal rationalism and the belief that human societies can be engineered or that human behavior is mechanical.

Faith in science is largely what the Enlightenment was all about. Some is justified, but it went too far in its failure to recognize man is flawed and understanding of himself and his world uncertain.

What I find troubling is that, while science and scientists are held in high esteem, your average person is just believes and almost blindly in many cases. Popular articles on science are a great example of this phenomena. You'll articles from time to time about neuroscientists proving there is no free will or that morality is an evolutionary adaptation. Then you read the article and you're like...nah, not really. lol

You see it everyday in arguments about climate change.

So you think brilliant men like Madison and Jefferson would have been anti science? Why is it just one or the other? Closed minded never got America to lead the world.
