Researchers are potty-training cows to go to the bathroom where their feces and urine can be collected and treated, reducing ammonia emissions. When cattle are allowed to relieve themselves as they graze, their waste can collect in fields and contaminate local waterways. If confined to a barn, urine and feces can mix together and yield ammonia, an indirect greenhouse gas.

Both scenarios are problematic for human and environmental health. To keep barns more sanitary, waterways clean and greenhouse gas emissions low, researchers have started training cow to urinate and defecate in designated areas.

That ammonia and hydrogen sulfide (another gas generated in livestock and poultry operations) gas in the air, when combined with high humidity can also cause electrical fires in barns, since it causes copper in the barn electrical system (i.e. electrical panels, junction boxes etc) to corrode. It can also cause corrosion in areas where rodents have chewed the insulation off of exposed wiring resulting in arcing. I think hog operations are probably the most susceptible, but any barn containing livestock or poultry is at risk unless all the wiring is armored or run through PVC electrical conduit and the electrical panels and junction boxes are well sealed. I've handled major hog and dairy farm losses worth millions, including the death of livestock, because of fires caused by corrosion. Potty training cows sounds like a good way to reduce those corrosive gases in dairy operations.
