Prisoners serving life sentences in Denmark are to be prevented from starting new romantic relationships after it emerged a 17-year-old fell in love with Peter Madsen, the murderer of the journalist Kim Wall, while he was in jail.

For the first 10 years of their imprisonment, long-term inmates’ contacts, by letter, phone or online, will be limited to people they already knew before they entered prison, under legislation tabled by the social democrat-led government.

“We have seen distasteful examples in recent years of prisoners who have committed vile crimes contacting young people in order to gain their sympathy and attention,” the justice minister, Nick Hækkerup, said. “This must obviously be stopped.”

Thats a good idea, marrying a lifer is just plain assinine, marry him then go have sex with your boyfriend because theres no conjugal visits

I have no idea if it's supported by the science, but I've always thought this kind of "jailhouse romance" was indicative of the tendency of many women to want to connect with "bad boys" while removing the risk of any actual violence to themselves. In the case of really infamous criminals, of course, there's the added benefit to the women of becoming, at least in some weird circles, minor celebrities themselves.

My first thought when reading this story, though, was that this type of legislation would never get off the ground in the U.S. Prisoners' rights advocates would point out, among other things, Constitutional protections with regard to free (ironic, in this context) association, as well as a lack of any compelling public interest in banning such communications or "relationships".

I certainly agree that this behavior is an unrealistic fantasy and should be discouraged in the very least.

I think the kind of women who do this probably have very low self-esteem.

My ex wife had an acquaintance who was grossly overweight. After her husband died she joined up with a prison visitation group. She ended up marrying a prisoner who was never going to get out of prison. The only thing we could figure was that at least this way she could lie to herself that she had some sex appeal. What was the motivation for her "husband" who weighed about 1/3rd of what she did? She was able to give him money for things he may have wanted to purchase in prison.

Anyone who wants to link up with a lifer should be required to go through some extremely intense therapy.
