I use empty 30 pack Coors Light containers for paper trash and the messy stuff in the plastic kitchen bags.








And have no delusion that I am Saving the Planet, but it makes sense.

I actually backed off and recycle less than I once did.

For the most part, they do not want to tell citizens that they are throwing most of your recycling away, but they are pretty much back to saying they want cardboard that has not been heavily printed on, surface or wax treated or with adhesive labels. They want plastic bottles sometimes (depending on price) and have no need for plastic parts that you thought would go straight to remelt. Don't put your recyclables in bags or closed boxes. They clog up the sorting machines.

With China no longer buying our unsorted trash, the cost to sort is more than the savings they were making in avoiding putting it in landfills. Not putting it in landfills was the real savings not the reclaimed materials.

Recycling has always been more about the message than the facts. Lift the lid on the sorted containers on most street side containers. You sort it and under the cover it all falls back into a single bin.
The good news about China not buying it anymore is that small amount they were recycling from us ended up with the vast majority being dumped into the oceans. That was your fields of plastic in the Pacific that you could almost walk on.

Things to recycle:
Steel and aluminum cans (food waste still on them is okay, no need to wash)
Glass jars and bottles (same)
Newspaper
Corrugated cardboard, if you're a business that runs through a lot of it.


Things to toss:
Plastic
Miscellaneous paper and cardboard.
Any non-metal/glass with food waste on it, like pizza boxes.
Miscellaneous metal or glass bits

Cardboard, #1 plastics.

mayo type jars are used for fats and other nasties that we don't want going into the septic. Coffee grounds, egg shells, veggie scraps all go in the composter. Meat scraps go in the garbage.

We take about one kitchen sized garbage bag to the convenience center a week. Recycling about once a month, we don't use much plastic.
