    Linux

    Who all use Linux?

I have a decade-old laptop. It's too slow for Windows. But might do with Linux. It's a Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 from 2012, a 64 bit Intel Core i5-3317U @ 1.70GHz with 4 GB Ram with at least 100 GB hard drive if I remove Windows.

    Is that OK for Linux?

What version of Linux do you recommend? I'm thinking Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian.

    Is installation easy enough?

Thanks for posting this, I have an older laptop I'd like to try Linux on as well.

Windows 10 will work on older machines. I recently installed Windows 10 on a PC that was quite old and it works fine.

As for Linux, there are several Linux distros that will work on your computer. Here's a good article listing "lightweight" Linux operating systems: https://www.techradar.com/news/best-...t-linux-distro

The ease of installation depends on the distro, I guess, and on your PC's BIOS. If you can, I would format the hard drive, load into the BIOS,, and then boot from a flash drive that has your Linux distro on it.

I use Linux Mint Cinnamon edition on my older systems. However, I load them with Linux versions of popular software like Mozilla, Open Office and Gimp...

Compatibility is not much of an issue anymore except for some plug & play type devices. Printer compatibility would probably be the first problem you may run into.

I put Cinnamon one of my kids leftover Walmart style netbook which only had a 10 gig HD. Window 10 could not update anymore because of space restrictions.
It ran perfectly after the installation.

My only reason for continued use of a windows PC is for the communication software that I use for access the server at work.

Windows 10 works. But the thing is too slow, unbearably so.

I'm hoping there's a version of Chrome browser that runs on Linux and that all the extensions I use work. Not vital, but would be nice.

My old notebook will run W10 but it's so slow compared to my i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz with 32 GB RAM, so slow I can't bear it. Besides, I already bought a replacement, Octa-Core Ryzen 7 4700U (>i7-10510U) 16GB, so the old one gathers dust and makes for a good machine to experiment on.

Just out of curiosity is the big issue that your old laptop has a HHD and your new one has a SSD?

Just putting a Solid State Drive in your old laptop can make a large difference. About $100 bucks for a 1TB SSD. Mirror it to your current drive first and then swap them out. Just make sure your HD is not soldered in like HP and some other suppliers used to do.
