    Plus the chairman of the joint chiefs is simply being the voice of the various chiefs to the senior civilian leadership. The chairman is not in the military chain of command. The various chiefs are.

    It's hard to know for sure, since so much of what the military does is shrouded in secrecy. But according to Trump's special envoy to Syria, Trump was being mislead about troop levels in Syria via "shell games". Generally speaking, the generals and the intelligence officials were totally against Trump's desire to leave Syria. They were clearly manipulating the situation to keep Trump from fulfilling his campaign promises about leaving the Middle East.

    The old traditional apolitical general officer is a thing of the past.
