The Difference Between a Democracy and a Republic

The US has a republican form of government. This is most obviously seen in the Senate where each state has two representatives and in the electoral college. Liberals want to change this, make it a democracy. But as the founders knew, more democracy doesn't mean better or more just.

No trolling. Stick to the topic: You don't need to discuss the video but the topic is the difference between a democracy and a republic.

The general idea is that the people elect responsible Representatives who act within the limits of the Constitution. Senators are meant to be even more cautious representing States Rights and National Interests. They do not get elected in order to fulfill every public whim of the moment, handout money from the treasury for your personal gain, or invent rights that never before existed.

This is a word game that never ceases to amaze me as what does it mean finally?

    That's an odd opinion piece.

In the second paragraph it cites: "The founding generation was deeply skeptical of what it called 'pure' democracy and defended the American experiment as 'wholly republican.'" That is precisely what is said in the video. But the second paragraph continues with this disingenuous twist: "To take this as a rejection of democracy misses how the idea of government by the people, including both a democracy and a republic, was understood when the Constitution was drafted and ratified." No, to the founders it was quite clear. The second paragraph concludes with the writers agenda: "It misses, too, how we understand the idea of democracy today."

This pattern continues throughout the oped.

The final paragraph is self-expository. It opens with "High-minded claims that we are not a democracy surreptitiously fuse republic with minority rule rather than popular government." No, the video nor anyone but liberals like the oped author fuse republic with minority rule. It goes on, skipping a repetitive sentence with "Routine minority rule is neither desirable nor sustainable, and makes it difficult to characterize the country as either a democracy or a republic." Here he merely attacks his strawman. And finally he reveals his agenda: "We should see this as a constitutional failure demanding constitutional reform." The Constitution is the problem and needs to be changed!

Minority rule? You mean like Biden? Who received slightly above 25% of all eligible voters' votes. Who leads a minority of Democrats between left-wing socialists and right-wing moderates.

Joe Biden Is a Threat to the Constitution

...Once upon a time, Biden insisted that he was for free speech and against “silencing” — even when it became raucous. Now, he has enlisted the attorney general in a disgraceful and unconstitutional attempt to chill the speech of American parents who aren’t thrilled at the prospect of their children being conscripted into Ibram X. Kendi’s army.

...In August, having confirmed repeatedly that he did not possess the legal authority to extend the federal eviction moratorium unilaterally, Biden not only decided to do it anyway, but announced that he was doing so in order to game the court system and “keep this going for a month — at least.” More recently, Biden has played the same game with his federal vaccine mandate. In July, both the White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, and the head of the CDC, Rochelle Walensky, echoed Joe Biden’s December insistence that there would be no federal rule. Vaccine mandates, Jen Psaki confirmed, are not “the role of the federal government,” but of “institutions, private-sector entities, and others.” “There will be no nationwide mandate,” Walensky assured reporters. “There will be no federal mandate.” In September, Biden announced such a mandate and told any governor who opposed it to “get out of the way.”

Well, I’m afraid that’s not how any of this works. Joe Biden is the temporary custodian of the Oval Office, and, contrary to the obsequious implications of many in the media, he is as obliged to honor his oath of office as is anybody else in public life. If he cannot do that, it is he, not the American order, who must “get out of the way.”

A Democracy points to a direct participation of the public in the government but theoretically that would be without representatives. Democracy never existed in anything but a very small population.

A Republic just points to an elected form of government where the people elect representatives to run the government.

The Republic of the United States specifically provides all the states with the representative power. The states pick the representatives for the federal government by design. The states determine how they do that.
It has mutated due to federal interference and law changes within the states themselves.
