Apparently there were two major interference calls missed on one play near the end of the Brown's shootout loss Sunday. Baker called out the refs and he seems pretty confident that he will be fined for it.
Parody is great , closer games, closer playoff races , SB's down to the wire. But let's face it the refs decide too many games. The inconsisitentcy of what is called and when it is called is unacceptible. Especially in the passing game. If you want to let some contact go that's not ideal but it's not the end of the world as long as you do so consisitently. But that is not the case in the NFL. Yesterday alone I saw clear holding in the endzone not called and clear holding in the endzone deemed NOT to have been in the endzone. OL tackling defenders ignored and questionable holding called.
But it is the contact in the passing game that is called the most inconsistently and has the most dire consequences. Hence Mayfield's frustration and mine as a fan. To be clear I'm not talking about officiating that consistently errs a little towards the old "letting em play" which is nothing more than changing the rules and players can adapt to that. For example the ump having his "own strike zone" in baseball. But that way of doing things involves consistenly calling things your way. This stuff is all over the board. Let go an obvious PI then turn around and call one over little or nothing in the next series. I'll be the first to say that their job is difficult and their mistakes often exposed only by modern photographic technology. I do not think they are doing this to favor any one team. However this consistent inconsistency cannot be so esasily writen off. The other problem is that one 5 yard illegal contact can give you afirst down or not on 3rd and 30 and PI can cover 50 yards. They are the calls that swing games. Such calls have helped decide post season games often. The most famous was the fiasco with the Rams v Vikings a few years back. Another was the triple non call ( holding, illegal contact or PI) anyone of which would have been a fair call but none were made late in the Ravens vs 49ers SB. But these are just two of many. The thing is with non calls you cannot be certain if they really changed the outcome or not.
The leauge reacted to that non call on the Rams by making PI reviewable but once the fans were passified they quietly got rid of that. I just don't understand what's going on but it's been this way for well over a decade. One yera the NFL made calling defensive holding a point of empyasis but basically gave up on the project halfway through the season.
I know people who have stopped watching over these issues alone. I know what I see but I do not know why it exist.
