That is another of those words with an interesting history. It dates back to at least the 1200s, earlier if you include its Latin roots. It wasn't until early in the 20th century that it gained use as a derogatory term for homosexuals. At various times it has meant a bundle of sticks, a traditional British food made of Pork, an unpleasant woman and at one time, it was even used as a verb, which meant something like "Do a favor" or "Carry out a chore". In British slang, it was also a wooden torch and as you mentioned, it was popular slang for a cigarette.
