Robert and Noni Whitley enlisted professional shoplifters to steal cosmetics, toothpaste, razor blades and more from retailers including CVS, Walgreens and Target

A father-daughter duo from Atlanta has been sentenced to more than five years in prison for deploying an army of professional shoplifters to steal millions of dollars of merchandise from retailers such as CVS and Target and then selling the goods online.

Robert Whitley, 70, and his daughter, Noni Whitley, 47, were accused of running the scheme for nearly a decade and organizing the theft of $6.1 million in merchandise before being busted in 2019, prosecutors said.

The pair pleaded guilty in April to interstate transportation of stolen property. Prosecutors at the time described the Whitleys’ operation as a “well-organized criminal enterprise disguised as an apparently legitimate small business.” “This is retail theft on a massive scale,” said Kurt Erskine, the acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia.

I wonder how they estimated the dollar amount?

Also, it seems they pled guilty to "interstate transportation of stolen property," so that should be a federal crime, right? But, what kind of sentence does it carry, I wonder?

So those are the people that the IRS wants to catch in their $600 dragnet. But they have to scan everyone's bank accounts because of it.....

I actually forgot about selling online when I saw the recent stories of shelves being wiped out of low cost items. My thought is what do they do with 10 years of toothpaste? Now I know.

30 years ago or so, a group was busted at the mall I was working at, they were found with a map of the East Coast with all the malls (right off the highway) marked, from Florida to Maine. They were not only shoplifting, but "washed" one dollar bills and printed five's on them, because who would check a five dollar bill for that? The store that they tried to buy a multi-hundred dollar item with a huge stack of fives, that's who. I also personally witnessed a "false labor" scam at another retail shop...if these people only used their powers for good...
