NYC: Racism is Now a Public Health Crisis

Board of Health Passes Resolution Declaring Racism a Public Health Crisis

The resolution recognizes the impact of racism on health during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond
The resolution requests several actions from the Health Department including making recommendations to the NYC Racial Justice Commission, establishing a Data for Equity working group, performing an anti-racism review of the NYC Health Code, and issuing a semi-annual report on progress associated with this resolution
October 18, 2021 — The New York City Board of Health today passed a landmark resolution on racism as a public health crisis (PDF), requesting that the Health Department expand its anti-racism work. The resolution institutionalizes the vision behind the Health Department’s June 2020 declaration and requires that the Department develop and implement priorities for a racially just recovery from COVID-19, as well as other actions to address this public health crisis in the short and long term.
“To build a healthier New York City, we must confront racism as a public health crisis,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Dave A. Chokshi. “The COVID-19 pandemic magnified inequities, leading to suffering disproportionately borne by communities of color in our City and across our nation. But these inequities are not inevitable. Today is an historic day for the country’s oldest Board of Health to officially recognize this crisis and demand action.”
“We’ve seen for years the negative impact racism has in our public health data and today, we’re recommitting ourselves to building a more equitable City,” said First Deputy Commissioner and Chief Equity Officer Dr. Torian Easterling. “I thank the Board of Health for sharing our commitment to dismantling systemic racism.

They're basing a major part of this on the fact that BIPOCers have suffered and died at greater rates than whites from Covid.

While it's true that a more significant percentage of blacks are overweight, I'm not sure that's the result of racism. It could be the result of poverty, but more whites (number-wise) live in poverty than blacks.

One thing is certain--all Americans have access to free testing and free vaccines. Blacks are the largest group of non-vaxxers, so that might come into play, but still...I don't see racism in there.

Another reason we need to separate Government from healthcare as much as possible. They are using it as an excuse to push Social Justice agendas just as they are abusing the proper definition of Infrastructure to pay for social welfare programs.

And there is NO COVID racism. Anybody who gets very ill goes to the hospital and gets the same limited treatment.

The problem of the inner city has been known since March of 2020, in that patients with obesity (especially suffering type 2 diabetes), drug and alcohol abuse, and smokers (or live with smokers) were dying more than most.

If I wanted to be political I would say that the Welfare lifestyle created and supported by Democrats is killing many of them!

Everything is racism. The HOV lanes on freeways were designed to get White supremacists through black parts of town more quickly.

Actually, that's probably a lot closer to the truth than any other factor they're throwing out.

I don't know how much a family who gets SNAP benefits gets, but I know I've seen young mothers paying for a whole lot of junk food with SNAP cards. In the stores, I see little "WIC" labels under certain foods--milk, eggs, meat, etc., and I always thought those on benefits were supposed to choose from those labeled items. Obviously, that's not the way it works, though.

I get it that we need to feed the poor. That's okay, but we shouldn't be feeding them $#@!.

I would prefer to have boxes of food made up and have the family pick up the boxes once per week, or so.
