A family's "pet dog" that angered neighbours by killing and eating ducks and chickens has turned out to be a fox. Maribel Soleto bought a new pup from a small shop in central Lima, Peru, believing it was a young dog.

The animal, which they called "Run Run", initially played happily with other pet dogs in the neighbourhood, but as it grew up, signs emerged that something wasn't quite right. Run Run showed a real passion for chasing and killing ducks and chickens in a move that angered the local community. The pet turned out to be an Andean fox, which has thin legs, a bushy tail, a pointed head and prominent ears.

Now the poor thing is being hunted down like a criminal. I hope they don't hurt him.

I have never quite understood that.

A fox is a fox. They do things like eat ducks and chickens. It is their nature. Instead of blaming the animal and hunting him down, the people who have ducks and chickens (that they probably intend to kill and eat themselves) should take measures to make sure they aren't vulnerable.

Let the fox be a fox and just safeguard your stuff.

I'm sure that this fox isn't the only predator around that poses a danger to domestic fowl - even dogs will kill for sport. You'd think they'd keep their birds in a decent pen, but it sounds like they just run around loose along with all the dogs in the area.
