I played around with simple solar ovens just after watching a Youtube video. I just used an old small styrofoam cooler, tinfoil and a glass plate that I saved from a old scanner. It actually worked well and I could boils a cup of water but it had two issues. The sun moves and the those dang clouds. But for something that took 2 minutes to build, I'll have to play with it again post retirement. I'll have to find a cheap fresnel lens.

But the simple cinder brick stoves are something anyone can make and use

I watched a video where a guy was freezing water in a 5 gal buckets.
The premise is centered around using a homemade parabolic shielded, with a pipe full of ammonia in it's center, then piping it into a ground chamber. Cover the shield and the ammonia returns to the pipe and PRESTO, Ice!!!!
    I bought his book.
I have baked bread in a homemade solar chamber.

look for discarded big screen TV's. The older models with projectors have a such a lens.
I have twenty or so of them, and on a good day, I can melt blacktop paving

Gas grill with two or three tanks, no wood stove anymore though but fireplace. I've even got camping contrapitions I could use to cook on it. Heat would be our biggest concern
