When I was in law enforcement several deputies made donations to various political or even controversial causes and made them public knowledge. There was no Department discipline. Sometimes one would get a certain amount of criticism from other deputies, but nothing dramatic. But them my sheriff and his chiefs were on the conservative side and respected different opinions being aired.

That may be the core issue.

I don't think that a police officer can be fired simply because his boss disagrees with his politics, especially if the police department is unionized. Then the conditions of employment and termination are defined.

in my former department tbe only time a deputy could be fired “at will” was during the probation period which lasted one year. A probationary deputy had no union or guild support for disciplinary purposes.
