Sweden's First Female Prime Minister Quits After Parliament Votes for Opposition Budg

Sweden's First Female Prime Minister Quits After Parliament Votes for Opposition Budget.....

Hours after being appointed as Sweden's first female prime minister, Magdalena Andersson stepped down Wednesday after suffering a budget defeat in parliament that led her coalition partner, the Green Party, to leave the two-party minority government.

The Associated Press reported that the Swedish parliament rejected the government's budget proposal in favor of the opposition's, which includes the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats, a group with Neo-Nazi roots.

Members of the Green Party said it was in their best interests to pull their support for Andersson after the budget defeat, saying they could not sit on a government that approves a plan by the Sweden Democrats.

Andersson said there is a constitutional practice that a coalition government should resign if one party chooses to leave, so she is following that practice......snip~

Well you know she isnt a real Democrat. A US Democrat would never give up power and would do everything it can to not be recalled.

In Parliamentary systems, I think it is pretty much unofficial protocol to trigger an election if your party cannot pass a budget. Happens in Canada, also. It suggests you do not have enough confidence in the House, so you can either get a vote of nonconfidence or trigger an election without that. The Riksdag likely works similarly, by the sounds.

It still comes across as a bit cowardly and giving up.

It's not. It's just protocol when a coalition falls apart. She needs a new mandate as Prime Minister heading a single-party government. If she has enough support from the other parties, she will be appointed Prime Minister, which according to news reports, seems fairly certain to happen.

If you cannot pass a budget, you stall the entire government. Rather than playing chicken, most parliamentary systems seem to have unofficial or official protocols for triggering an election or shuffle.

Stephen Harper triggered 2 or 3 such elections before he was able to get a majority and pass any budget he wanted.
