If someone has a gun on you and you think he is going to use it, then using the element of surprise might only reduce your life by a few minutes or less.

This is where I had the only issue with the Arbery case. I don't know if he really had no way out, No he was no obligated to run, but did he charge a person holding the gun out of rage, stupidity, despair...?

Nothing in that trial gave me an indication as to why he would have decided to charge McMichael. Then we have to figure out what he would have done once he got the fun, since he already had another gun out and ready to shoot him had he taken the gun and tried to use it for protection.

If he broke into my house and I pulled my gun, then he came after my gun then I'm shooting in self defense. As Arbery, if he is convinced he is being chased by a lynch mob and he has no way out but to grab the weapon, then he is just acting in self-defense.
The entire actions of the three chasing a trespasser down the street with trucks and guns should be a totally different set of charges, even had this turned out with an arrest or Arbery getting away.

It isn't a yes or no question. You forgot DEPENDS. If I thought someone was an active shooter and I had a chance at a reasonable probability body slam from behind in order to save lives? Absolutely.

The question was actually about saving your own life. He referenced the Rittenhouse and Arbery case.

I get it, I would also be acting selfishly with my blindside body slam. I could be next.

Sure, this particular instance was about saving your own life, but the question is a good one to ask for other scenarios, as well.

Bo mentioned an active shooter situation which could result in a mass casualty event. It could also be something like an armed robbery in which the thief is about to shoot the clerk at the cash register, or a domestic disturbance in which a husband is bout to cap his wife. We could apply the question to literally hundreds of scenarios, but it would still have too many variables to give a simple yes or no answer.

I think if you are convinced the person with the gun is about to pull the trigger on you, you have nothing to lose and possibly everything to gain by launching a counter attack. In other circumstances, you would probably want to factor in some of those variables I keep harping about.

Do you believe the gunman is going to shoot someone?
What are the chances of a successful counterattack?
    How close is he?
    Is he focused or distracted?
Does he handle the gun like a true pistolero or is he as scared as you are?
What angles of approach do you have?
Do you have any weapons of your own?
Will anyone else present help you take him down if you initiate the action?

I could probably come up with a hundred such things to consider, but the one that is most important is the one you and Bo and others looked at. "Is he about to pull the trigger?". In that case, you have nothing to lose by trying to take him down.

Many ifs and depends, no straight yes or no.

If my or someone's life was in immediate danger, then chances are it would happen as a defensive move. While one can judge a situation in calm surroundings, if you are in the middle of a high adrenaline situation, the fight or flight mode kicks in.
