In his interview with Hannity, Kyle describes in great detail, the skateboard attack. And how the assailant had the skateboard gripped by the trucks. I did a LOT of skateboarding as a kid, and even young adult, I know exactly what gripping a skateboard by the trucks feels like. It's a very firm grip, and could easily make the skateboard an effective environmental weapon. I can see how it could be customized to be even more effective.

Devotion to the truth is the hallmark of morality; there is no greater, nobler, more heroic form of devotion than the act of a man who assumes the responsibility of thinking.”

Two reasons, I think.
1. It also serves as a getaway vehicle if the person needs to outrun a pursuer. A good skateboarder can get up to about 20 mph with minimal physical output. Someone chasing on foot will wear out more quickly.
2. A person can wield a lot of force with a skateboard strike -- not as much as with a bat --but enough to kill.
Yes, they can also do damage with many other items, but they think they look "cool" skateboarding around in the midst of chaos. Carrying a bag of feces isn't nearly so impressive.

Oh yes. You can definitely generate enough force to strike someone hard enough to kill them with a skateboard.
It's happened before.
