That seems to be the case with alternative energy in general. Solar is great on a small scale but we are nowhere near the point where we can depend on it as a major energy source

Yes. In fact, electric motors can have more power than typical internal combustion engines, it just depends on the size of the motors used in the vehicle. Why do you think that trains and many ships use diesel powered electric engines i.e. diesel electric generators and electric motors? Electric motors can provide maximum torque at 0 MPH and in any vehicle, torque translates to speed, so you have instant acceleration and better towing power. Gas-powered engines, on the other hand, take longer to accelerate to faster speeds. Electric motors are simply more efficient than internal combustion engines. For one thing, there is far less friction in an electric motor than in an IC engine and friction equates to loss of power. Electric motors on average, convert over 90% of the electrical power supplied into motion, while IC engines manage only 20% efficiency.

EVs can have 2, 4 or all-wheel drive.

How a vehicle performs in snow has less to do with the means of locomotion than other design/engineering factors as well as the tires' suitability in snow and operator experience. However, cold weather can reduce battery charges more rapidly, so depending on the age of the technology in the EV, you may have less range.
