I used to play a sort of game with google maps in Los Angeles. Open google maps and switch to satelite view. Now zoom in to a random area in the LA city limits. 95 times out of 100, you will zoom into single family homes. It is INSANE. LA is a city of houses. No apartment buildings. This is why housing is so expensive. This is why there is homelessness in LA.
I agree that some of it is the NIMBY effect, but there are other reasons, too. California has legislated itself out of affordable housing. When we were building in the Reno/Tahoe area, the codes required special tweaks and additions that effectively doubled the final cost. For example, one of the requirements is the installation of hurricane ties between the foundation, sill plate, and lower framing members. They couldn't be just any ties, they had to be Simpson Ties (a brand) and that added at least $10K to the cost, and we had structural engineers tell us it was counterintuitive because the fasteners used to attach the ties were actually weakening the structural integrity. California codes also require an architect's stamp on virtually any change order and then they charge for inspections. The permits are sky-high already. In Kansas, you can build a 3-car garage for around $60K. In certain counties in California, that same garage would run over $200K, and the builders there are not the ones making out like bandits.

You'll never get California to (un)legislate all their building rules, so building costs can't drop.

But, back to the NIMBY thing. You cannot blame anyone for wanting to protect their neighborhood. The cost of a house is typically the single largest purchase folks make and they don't want to lose on their investment. In the video, someone wanted a zoning variance in a two-acre area to put in multiunit housing. That towering building would have stuck out like a sore thumb. I don't blame homeowners for not wanting it there. Plus, when you start talking about the homeless, you're talking about additional problems, because some of them just don't have the mental capacity to care for themselves in a better manner. There's a lot of mental disorder among the homeless.

Here's a question for you--are you prepared to allow a half-dozen homeless persons to pitch tents and live in your backyard? Because if you aren't, you really can't judge the people in the video who aren't prepared either.

That said, conservatives typically do take better care of their neighbors and the needy because they do it directly. My little community is small, very conservative, and very able to help those who come here and need help. We have an Adopt a Family program that we've participated in for about 20 years, and it involves purchasing all the food and gifts for a family in need for Christmas. Our Habitat organization has to advertise to try and find families that will take us up on the offer to build houses for them. The churches stand ready to take in the homeless and feed them, so the problems are dealt with as they occur and they never grow into the massive issues seen in huge cities.

The problem with Democrats--just my opinion--is that they want the government to do their charitable works for them, and government always $#@!s it up.

I agree with the schooling thing in the video--that's just not right.

Liberal hypocrisy is to blame for all of this country's problems. You're just now figuring this out? Better late than never I suppose.

Is that actually from the NY Times? I doubt it. But the graphs represent populous areas/states, has nothing to do with democrats. Homelessness is a function of society, of economics and opportunity, not government. Where government is involved such as public housing, homelessness is reduced. There were several of these developments in Philly, I went to school with the children who lived there. That helped many and that is a reality I saw and know and not BS feed to the easily led. You people are so easily led, nothing should confuse anyone who thinks for themselves. Learn folks learn, stop being dupes. Constant finger pointing has addled your brains, you may want to find a mirror.

We don't have to travel through the back country to find poverty.
All we have to do is try to stroll through certain sections of Chicago, NYC, Baltimore, Atlanta, LA, San Fran, Portland OR, or DC and we can find 90% of all poverty.

You misunderstood. No one is asking dems to put up tents in their neighborhood. They were being asked to rezone the area to allow a multistory, high density building to be erected. A seniors home. And the residents said “no”. Just like they always do. Lots are too expensive for a single middle class family to afford. And the rich residence wont let multi family buildings to share the cost.

The problem with Democrats--just my opinion--is that they want the government to do their charitable works for them, and government always $#@!s it up.
The first statement is very true , at least for me.

The problem is that the solutions generally create more problems than they fix.

Market forces take care of most issues not government.

The idea should not be to attack Palo Alto for wanting to be a nice neighborhood. LA and most of the towns outside of it are already not desirable.
LA imported their poor. Having grown up in MA, we did the same thing through liberal welfare policies. NY did the same thing.

California invites the homeless to CA by letting them live in tents under the sunshine on city streets and beaches.

All these social corrections do is ruin life for everyone and bring crime and drug use to every neighborhood.

Meanwhile we are inviting more people that not only do not have jobs or skills, but we also tell employers that we will fine them if they hire them. Then the same people complain that we do not enough cheap housing.
Then we want to solve housing by putting up ghettos in nice neighborhoods to destroy the lifestyle and assets that they worked to create?
We solve drug use by giving them free needles.
We solve obesity by giving them free electric scooters and handicap stickers.

The problems we have are created by the liberal Democrats.

The main reason US corporations see South America as risky places to build factories is because of socialists, corruption and unions.

California has factories closing an moving out. Give them a fair price for the land and they can walk to work. But close the damn borders.
    Let's go Brandon !!!

It's spread out because we had the room as SoCal developed and that is a decent way for working class people to live.

Is it a Social Justice crime to suggest we have enough people trying to live here already with the limited space resources we have? That some people don't want to be downtown Detroit or Chicago?

No wonder so many are selling up long time family homes to get out with people like you telling us how to live by remote.

When you invite the homeless, when you make it a billion dollar social services industry as CA has, you get a lot more of it.
