Australia To Unmask Undesirable Posters on Forums

Australian government vows to unmask online trolls

"You should not be able to use the cloak of online anonymity to spread your vile, defamatory comments," the attorney general said.

Australia's government said Sunday it will introduce legislation to unmask online trolls, and hold social media giants like Facebook and Twitter responsible for identifying them.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison, whose conservative coalition government faces an election in the first half of 2022, said the law would protect Australians from online abuse and harassment.

"The online world should not be a wild west where bots and bigots and trolls and others can just anonymously go around and harm people and hurt people, harass them and bully them and sledge them," Morrison told reporters.

There's been a spate of teenage suicides by kids who have been relentlessly attacked, shamed, trolled, ostracized and abused by other teen online trolls on social media. This is turning into a big problem. Kids can be ugly and hiding behind their keyboards on sites like Twitter and Instagram gives them the courage to be even uglier in packs in presumed safety.

These vicious little gangs of social media trolls should be held accountable imo. Social media has a lot to answer for.

It's not aimed at your average troll on small internet forums. It's a slippery slope so what do you do?

You invite all the trolls to a big party under the bridge. Then have a sudden, emergency release at the dam.

That's the problem with making laws...... The more laws the more totalitarianism.

The problem is that political speech and politicized information will become subject to criminalization.

It's certainly a conversation worth having in the U.S. People here (and doubtless in many other Western countries) have taken online anonymity for granted, but where is the basis, in fact or in law, for that assumption? Most of us, regardless of political orientation, make fun of people who do and say things in public and then cry that their "privacy" has been violated when everyone finds out about it. In terms of other means of communication, individuals who harass or threaten others using the U.S. mail or the telephone have no legal argument that their identities should be protected. What makes the Internet substantially different in that regard?
