Fairborn man declared wrongfully imprisoned after more than 30 years

A Fairborn, Ohio, man is officially declared wrongfully imprisoned after a legal battle that’s lasted more than 30 years. 56-year-old Dean Gillispie was officially declared a wrongfully imprisoned person Thursday morning in the Montgomery County Courthouse. “I lost 31 of the best years of my life to get here today, and it’s an overwhelming experience to finally be able to have them say the words that should have been said a long time ago,” Gillispie said.

Gillispie was wrongly convicted and imprisoned 31 years ago for the rapes of three women. He was released in 2011, and exonerated of the crimes in 2017.

Dean was a popular, all-American 25-year-old with a clean record and bright future in 1990, when he was plucked from the obscurity of his job as a security guard at a General Motors plant and arrested. A disgruntled co-worker had fingered him as a suspect in a string of three unsolved rapes near Dayton, Ohio. Unfortunately for Dean, his co-worker also was a friend of the detective in charge of the investigation.

The detective, it later became apparent, put Dean in his crosshairs and developed a serious case of tunnel vision. It would cost Dean the next two decades of his life.

I hate those stories. They're so sad.

“With the declaration of innocence that will officially be entered by the court today we can move forward with that lawsuit,” Gillispie’s attorney Michele Berry Godsey said.

The multi-million dollar civil action lawsuit will allow Gillispie to recover at least $40,330 dollars for each year in prison, recover lost wages, attorney fees and any other costs.

What makes me angry about these stories is that the detective is not named and free to roam the earth. Everyone should know what he is capable of as a person even in his retirement.

The other part that makes me angry about these stories is that despite the obvious flaws, the prosecutors continue to try to go after the real victim and they often spend years fighting to get out of jail after the proof has been found. I recall one story in VA where it took the rapist 6 years to get out of prison after the DNA evidence showed it was not him. He had already spent 20 years in jail.

Neither article mentions whether the detective who railroaded Gillispie is still living. Realistically, it's probably too late, if he is, for anyone to take any meaningful action against him.

I have to think that a more aggressive and experienced defense attorney would have found out about the two detectives who had worked the case earlier, discovered the missing police records, etc. and uncovered the whole stinking scheme. Come to think of it, why didn't those two detectives come forward when they saw Gillispie on trial and later convicted?

Except if he was still alive then it is never too late to tell people was a liar he is. He probably does not even regret it. He is probably on the HOA of his retirement condo, harassing a neighbor that he does not like.

Well, you don't seem to have gotten any smarter while you were gone.

    That is unfortunate.
