    New rule request...ANTI-TROLL VOTING SYSTEM

I would like to propose a system where the majority an 80% majority of members can vote off another member for their behavior that is offensive to ALL members regardless of political lean.

Though they keep within the rules, thereby hamstringing the MODS, we as a community can still take action to remove them by an 80% vote and that vote must be at least 10 members strong.

In the next several months, political tensions will be high with the onset of the midterm elections. This is guaranteed to bring trolls of all kinds to our community. They stay within the rules, so the Mods can't do much...but WE CAN...with this new rule.

    HOW IT WILL WORK:

New section added for members to go to for voting.

Section is up for seven (7) days. Can be initiated in that section by any member.

    After seven (7) days the member in question will be perma-banned if;

80% of those voting agree to ban them,
AND their number is ten (10) or greater.

We already have a POLL mechanism in-place for this.

    ********************************

This is OUR on-line community and we should not have to endure offensive behavior from anyone who pops in here from cyberspace and makes this place a mess.

Merely flushing their threads down in the The Hole does not stop them. They will just make another one.

If they offend members of leans left, right, and center, then they need to be gone....and gone by our own hand....freeing up our unpaid moderators this messy job.

First of all moderators are not hamstrung, the only thing that gets you removed from a forum is breaking the rules as written.

There is a system of discipline here that is more than lenient, moreso than any other forum ive ever been on and I was on my first in 1999-2000 they either warn you or send you a pm first..then they will warn you again and maybe a third

Any forum member who aggregiously breaks the rules will get disciplined as the mods decide at that point.

Members imho should never have the right to EVER decide who should get banned or not...

As far as trolling, you and everyone else posess's the ability to silence any troll on this forum instantly..."IGNORE"
I have 2 on ignore and they arent both liberals either.

Lastly, if you have a problem with a particular member, before you do anything else retired pm the mod of your choice and talk to them about it...they will listen even if they dont always agree with you.

BTW you are one of my favorite posters here... this is not criticing you or intended that way, its just an explanation as to why I personally wouldnt be for your proposal...

This sounds like a great idea, considering that, around here, injecting a little common sense into a discussion is considered trolling. Why not just say that you want to ban everyone you disagree with and get it over with?

Against. The rules don't require any rational argument for even calling a person a troll, defense again, and discussion by members. All that violates no call-outs. And it will be abused by a few.

We actually used to do that. We had a special group called VIPs who had a forum area hidden from the rest of the membership. The purpose was to discuss the forum and propose and vote on rules and improvements. Somehow it turned into for a few a room to vent personal animosities towards members behind their backs and led, iirc, to banning a member. It was abandoned.

As members we have two means of dealing with trolls.

One, as others have mentioned, ignore them. They will go away if they don't get enough attention. Problem is too many respond to trolls.

Two, report them. Explain why you think an OP is inflammatory. Refer to continuing trollish behavior. Uou can also, as Common says, PM a mod to discuss it. But you can't be responding online to a troll and reporting them--ignore and report. Let the mods deal with them.

I was one. It made me realize just how dedicated many of the whack-jobs here were to keeping their echo chamber "pure" and actually led me to not only resign as a VIP but leave the site for years and only show up to tweek the RWNJ's noses occasionally. This place is a joke. The moderation is a joke, the members are a joke, the owner is a joke. And you, Peaty, you are just about the biggest joke of all.
