The world’s largest chemical maker, BASF, produces ingredients for America’s most popular products, from soaps to surface cleaners to dishwasher detergent. Emissions from their U.S. plants elevate cancer risks for an estimated 1.5 million people.

I'm very cautious with these stories.
They get told as stories but when you get to the facts they only have one woman with breast cancer.

I had a supplier shut down in Massachusetts for their emissions causing Leukemia. The move was led by a local politician trying to make a name for himself. When the smoke was cleared some 100+ employees no longer had a job and it turned out that the leukemia rate in the area was actually found to be well below the national average.

The politician got re-elected. The workers lost their job. The company closed. It was all about someone writing a story that turned out to be just wrong.

As a side note, the company did reopen at some point, making a different product for the defense department. I always wondered if there was not some backdoor deal to serve as an apology.

    Yes. This.

BASF may well be exceeding emission levels, and, if so, they need to be brought into compliance, but someone is looking for a payout here.

When I started reading the intentionally slanted article, I just had to stop and laugh at the lengths they went to in playing the Godwin card.

To pressure BASF, OCAW produced a 53-minute video on the locked-out workers and the company’s membership in a chemical cartel with links to the Nazis.
And then, one woman described Port Arthur as having been "bucolic." What a joke! That place has one of the highest--if not the highest--murder rates in Texas. It's the armpit of the nation.

That said, sometimes a company really does pollute in ways dangerous enough to cause cancer and other diseases. I just don't find this to be a credible case. Maybe, but benzene, while dangerous when inhaled in high concentrations, is spewed profusely when volcanoes erupt. It's also in crude oil. Fumes from gasoline contain it, too.

Breast cancer isn't exactly rare in the US these days, and I'd be more concerned about eating processed foods that contain carcinogens. Her husband died of a pulmonary embolism, and she thinks it must have been related to cardiovascular disease caused by exposure to ethylene oxide. That's such a long shot.

Yuppers, someone is looking for payout. Everyone's a victim these days.

I grew up in a part of Louisiana that had many chemical plants and a nuclear power plant. And I went to law school (in New Orleans) that had a girl who came from a family of lawyers who go rich suing those plants on behalf of people who claim to have been injured by those plants.

(Many of the lawsuits were after explosions, so proving harm was pretty easy).
