Sausage vending machines are now a thing in Germany...
Food cravings don't operate on a set schedule. They can strike at any time, like during the late-night hours when most businesses are closed for the day. As the Independent reports, Germany has come up with an ingenious solution to this common inconvenience: 24-hour sausage vending machines that are accessible when the butcher is away.

The miniature meat markets have become popular in recent years outside German cities. Butchers and other purveyors of fresh food close early in rural parts of the country, which can make grocery shopping difficult for people who work typical hours. The sausage vending machines are always open for business, so customers can pick up their meat for the week's meals (or for an impromptu midnight snack) at the time that works best for them. There were more than 500,000 such machines servicing Germany's carnivores as of 2020, according to NPR.

Better than a vending machine full of junk food. These machines contain eggs, sausage, raw meat and potato salad. Add a veggie and you can make a well a balanced meal.

I'll be shocked if they haven't had those in Japan for at least a decade.

That's because it is revolting. 7-11s carry a majority of food items that are so full of salt and preservatives that expiration dates are not an issue, otherwise they're canned or frozen. You can usually find bread, milk and eggs (if you check the expiration dates), however I've found that what they carry tends to depend on their target market. You don't want to patronize a 7-11 that caters primarily to a high school.

We are in one of the most expensive zip codes in Northern VA, but the 7-11 does do mucho business with the army of tradesmen that keep the McMasions and their humongous yards and pools pretty. So the "sausage" case is "Mexican" food.
