You can also convert their use for an external hard drive to store additional information or back up.

That might not be a bad idea. I'd have to watch Youtube vids to know what to do. Are hard drives brand-specific? Model-specific? If I take one out and put a new one in -- what will happen when the laptop starts up? All my data will be gone? Will anything be on the computer then?

I mean, will the laptop still know how to connect to a router? Or, is that info stored elsewhere?

Just open it up and take it out. It is slotted into the motherboard and may have a cable attached that can be removed. No need to replace it if you are donating the machine. Tell them that it will need a hard drive.

Related: I just upgraded the RAM in my computer. Took 5 minutes. Oh, it is a desktop, not a laptop.

My laptop has a door for RAM replacement. One screw and it pops open. Same with harddrive.

BTW, my laptop fans are doing fine, quiet. It's been cold so they rarely turn on.

I haven't really looked at my laptop to see how it comes apart. All of the components are in the screen part since it is a detachable tablet. The keyboard side is just a very thin keyboard.
