Twenty hours and counting: The wheels in Virginia go nowhere in massive snowjam catas

A reminder to have cold weather gear, food, and water in your car during the winter. Oh, and gas.

Tim Kaine is one of those stuck.

Twenty hours and counting: The wheels in Virginia go nowhere in massive snowjam catas

Hey, I’m from Los Angeles and lived in Minnesota for nearly 25 years. I’ve been in traffic jams and driven in blizzards. Not once in my life have I spent more than three hours on the road. Thousands of drivers have gotten stuck on the ice and snow in Virginia for as much as a full day, and there’s still no end in sight for most of them:
I started my normal 2 hour drive to DC at 1pm yesterday. 19 hours later, I’m still not near the Capitol. My office is in touch with
    @VaDOT
to see how we can help other Virginians in this situation. Please stay safe everyone.

Living in the north for as long as I did, I developed the habit of filling the gas tank when it got between half- and three-quarters empty, especially in winter. Drivers need the gas on hand for just these kinds of situations to provide heat if stuck in the snow. But how long can that last, and how many drivers on the southern Atlantic seaboard follow that practice? It’s very likely at this point that cars have run out of fuel by now, which at the very least will add to the logistical problem of clearing the road but might also mean hypothermia and death for those trapped inside. That’s not even accounting for hydration, normal bathroom relief, and so on.

It’s true that Virginia may not see the same kind of consistent, months-long weather like this that Minnesota and other northern states do. They see enough of it, however, to plan and prepare for such contingencies. When this is over, the Virginia legislature had better do a thorough investigation into how hundreds or thousands of drivers got left stranded for a day or longer in potentially deadly conditions. Speaking of which, so far no one’s talking about a body count — but we’ll be fortunate indeed if everyone survived this so far, and the rescue hasn’t happened yet.

Of course it's the newly elected republicans fault according to the very biased media. More than likely vaccination requirements have once again decimated another work force that people depend on.

You can't fix stupid. There is no excuse for anyone to be stuck out there.
There were warnings going out at 4:00 AM and all morning to NOT drive and to stay home.
Don't care about Kaine's political affiliation, leaving at 1:00 PM was a stupid thing to do.
The real victims are the children and pets that were driven into that mess.

Funny. Youngkin isn't even in yet and it is his fault!

That poor man with end-stage renal disease who they interviewed on Fox was so emotional thinking that he might have died out there on the road if he hadn't been rescued. It makes you wonder how many of those people stuck on the road might not have had the medications that they need (like insulin) or were freezing to death.

I wonder how many had to make a pilgrimage to the adjacent woods - you can't go 19 or 20 hours without relieving yourself. I also wonder whether lack of snow tires might have contributed to the crash involving several vehicles around noon on the 3rd, that began the entire traffic ordeal.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

It was snowing so hard the snow plows could not keep up.
They were telling people all morning to NOT drive.
It was being broadcast on every radio, and TV station from Frederick, MD to Richmond VA.
I feel sorry for the children that were dragged into that mess by parents who had been warned not to go there.

And snow tires would not have made any difference. It rained then switched to freezing rain (sleet) and then began to snow. That combined with people around here do not know how to drive in the snow doomed anyone who set out on 95 north or south yesterday. That and I believe they said what started the problem southbound was two or more semi trucks jack knifed and blocked the entire highway.

    That's awful.

I sure wouldn't want to be driving an electric car in that mess. Even the ones with gas need to ration how often they turn on the vehicle for heat.

Dehydration would be one of my main concerns--that, and hypothermia. I hope the motorists are sharing their vehicles to prolong the amount of gas they have to stay warm.

What a nightmare. The National Guard should be standing by to airlift the ones who are suffering.

I'm not sure that fellow they interviewed had a choice. He had been at the hospital with his wife getting tested to see whether she was a match to donate a kidney to him and they have a puppy at home, so they had to return. However, I'm sure that many people really didn't need to be on the road.

It got down to around 18 degrees. EV battery life sucks when it gets that low.
