Then there was the Navy Captain who was given bad coordinates from the GPS Satellite and ran aground. He, too, was relieved of command. I spoke with a First Class and his attitude was "He was the Captain, he was responsible". Totally trustworthy to do things "The Navy Way" but I wouldn't trust him to do the right thing.

That particular battalion commander held a social event prior to his change of command. Not one enlisted member of my company attended. Not even the 1SG. It was a big deal.

The battalion CSM and to one of our company formations the next day and told us that he was disappointed and we disgraced the unit. A platoon sergeant who was retiring soon stepped and said “Sergeant major with all due respect we are now probably more disappointed in you.”

Such a scenario could have been caused by a mechanical malfunction on the MH-60S, or it could be the result of a phenomenon called “ground resonance,” which can be caused if the air pressure in a helicopter’s wheels is not set properly.

When ground resonance occurs, a helicopter becomes unbalanced when its skids or wheels touch the ground, according to a 2012 Federal Aviation Administration handbook for helicopter instructor pilots. The aircraft will begin to rock, normally from side to side, and the strength of the vibrations grow until the swaying becomes uncontrollable."

Since she only assumed command on the 19th and the crash occurred on the 31st, there wasn't enough time for the maintenance department to go to pot. This vessel has 20 different departments that she would have been just be getting to know.

Evidently you’ve never been in the military. A section can “go to pot” very quickly when there’s a change of command.

She was also the XO previously and probably had experience with some of those same sailors. One of an XO’s primary areas of concern is maintenance.

You seem eager to make this about her command abilities. Do you disapprove of women in command positions or feel that they are inherently less capable?

Her command abilities is pretty much the purpose of the thread.

Based on the performance and policies put in place by our senior military leaders I have lost a lot of confidence in their commitment to maintaining readiness. Their focus today seems to be more related to social justice and equity, not to be confused with equality.

A pattern of lax maintenance takes time to establish. In any case, if this was due to a screw-up by one member of the maintenance crew - something overlooked, it's not necessarily indicative of an overall issue. It could also be due to something that maintenance couldn't predict, like an inherent defect. The helicopter and the deceased crew were recovered on October 8, 2021. In the time since the accident, the maintenance records would have been scrutinized and the relevant parts on the helicopter subjected to analysis (main rotor and tires). If it were a maintenance issue that could be blamed on command (i.e. lack of maintenance), I doubt that she would have set sail in January.

Poor maintence procedures can happen quite quickly. Just as poor maintence procedures can be corrected very quickly.
