Kazakh President: Withdrawal of CSTO Peacekeeping Forces to Begin on Thursday

The CSTO forces were deployed to Kazakhstan amid mass protests that turned violent in the country in early January following a twofold rise in fuel prices.

Thewithdrawal of Collective Security Treaty Organisation forces from Kazakhstan will begin on Thursday, 13 January, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

“Tomorrow the organised withdrawal of the CSTO peacekeeping contingent begins. I had negotiations with the leaders of the respective states. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the command of the contingent for the work done during these few days,” Tokayev told a response centre meeting.

He added that the mission has been successful and that the Kazakh forces managed to oust terrorists from Almaty thanks to the support of additional forces, including those sent by the CSTO.

Earlier this month, when protests in Kazakhstan over a hike in fuel prices turned violent, Tokayev announced that he had asked partners in the CSTO to send a peacekeeping contingent amid fears that the government would lose control of Almaty. He said that the protests had been hijacked by "terrorist elements" seeking to topple the government.

Did they get to shoot the protestors, or was it local forces?

I suspect that any armed protestors , who refused to surrender and hand over their weapons were dropped on the spot without a second thought . There were a lot of arrests ......however , it's over , and peace is restored in aprox 9 days from the start of the armed violence.......could be a world first here : a peacekeeping force that actually keeps the peace .

Around 160 were killed. I don't think that any were armed. Not that it matters.

Autocrats have less constraints when dealing with protestors.

I doubt any your sources are privy to the facts , which is why they have so much experience at making stuff up.......best to let the dust clear and see what the the real news is...........the overall story though , has only just begun .......and another coup attempt has failed miserably .

The Chinese government support the leaders of Kazakhstan and congratulate them on preventing the situation from escalating further .......but you could have found that out yourself , if you weren't so lazy , and so intellectually challenged ......(lol)
