B12 is great. You might also consider B9. If you have the MTHFR gene allele that makes you tired or irritable when you are deficient in B9/B12, supplementing them will definitely make you feel better. I think Swanson vitamins has a single capsule with both of them.

Food is the best source. Supplementation next if you don't eat right, have digestion issues, lifestyle choices that sap certain nutrients, or specific health goals.
I wouldn't focus too much on the recommended daily allowance, unless your goal is not health but getting just enough ahead to not get a disease related to a deficiency.
