It's just a forum. It's easy to walk away for a while.

Take a break. Take a breath. Go for a walk outdoors--that always helps.

It wasn't etched in stone b/c some could earn back a reset with good behavior.

I've always looked at it as moderator, not cop, censor, sheriff or parent. The mods job is to moderate the forum. To do this we had to look at everything in context and not everything was handled equally - we tried to use our judgment to keep discussion going.

There were a number of ways that Members could get perma-banned; such as:

were a constant headache to the mods
    over-reported
was reported a lot for blowing up threads or trying to
    spammed the forum
    fought with the mods
    total liar

Primarily, it was really the top one that I'd vote for. If a particular member was a total headache to the mods, they'd be gone. We felt they'd never change, as opposed to the one-off or every-now-and-then problem. We had a tendency to ignore the petty name-calling and smaller insults until it got out of hand by disrupting a thread - our entire goal was to moderate by not letting things get out of hand. Our forum got bought out by the newspaper in columbus and they closed that part down.

One thing that makes a good moderator--in addition to all the things Pammy says--is the aim is to moderate forum behavior toward what FindersKeepers says, that is, not to get rid of members but to help point them in the direction of good and expected behavior. Note that that's behavior, or attitude, or approach to posting and discussing political ideas and opinions: You are free to express your ideas and opinions just so long as you do so in a minimally reasonable way by following simple rules.

The odd thing is that this should ever have to be explained to anyone.
