Member Moderation

This came up about a week ago. I've waited to keep my question separate from any specific instance.

I think members should participate in moderation, at least to a moderate extent. What I mean is say you start a topic and someone posts off-topic, well then I think you can point it out, even request others to stay on topic. If you see what you think to be trolling, you should be able to call it out. Maybe you've started a tPF thread and want to give someone a chance to contribute before requesting a TB.

Mods sometimes warn and TB against that so I'm wondering isn't there some moderate line between what's acceptable and what's not? To me, that line might be saying it once but not repeating it many times. To me, that line might be doing it quietly without digressing from and wrecking the topic.

If you do it lightly, quietly, and it's ignored, the next step is to report it to the mods and let them handle it.

I don't have a problem with it. But topics do shift over time. So this would be more relevant in the beginning of a thread's life.

Right, you can't demand anything, since you have no real authority, just request it.

I hate to report anything and rarely will so isn't pointing out the poor behavior more welcome than increasing reporting. Sometimes you don't even know why the report took place or how your post went missing and was thrown into purgatory. Someone got their panties in a twist is all you can figure.

...it all sounds nice and tidy. If everyone was an adult and acted like it, sure. Unfortunately, it gets out of hand very quickly and spirals into chaos. Look at the tit-for-tat "prove it" contest we get on here now. I understand why the mods lean on it. Perhaps, try a 14 or 30 day test of it. After all, this is supposed to be a member run forum.
