One monster. A god. I can't remember if Cthulhu is an Elder or Ancient god.

Many of Lovecraft's myriad correspondents and friends, including Robert E. Howard and a young Robert Bloch, took up the torch, even in Lovecraft's lifetime, and incorporated "the Cthulhu Mythos" into their own stories, very much with his blessing. (A Bloch-inspired character appears and dies in Lovecraft's 'The Haunter of the Dark', and in return a Lovecraft-inspired character appeared and was killed in Bloch's 'The Shambler from the Stars'.) In more recent days, the very talented British writer James Lovegrove wrote a trilogy of books known collectively as The Cthulhu Casebooks, the premise of which is that the Sherlock Holmes stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle constituted a cover-up of Holmes' and Watson's true adventures, which were in battling the malignant forces of Cthulhu and the Elder Gods. In the final volume, Holmes and Cthulhu finally meet, face to...whatever, and only one survives. Great stuff.
"The guy who kills me...I hope he does it because he hates my guts, not because it's his job." - Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon

"Only a rank degenerate would drive 1,500 miles across Texas and not eat a chicken fried steak."
    - Larry McMurtry
