Just get those old records off the shelf

I'm slowly going through the stuff I brought back from my late sister's house last Fall, and this morning I opened a 45 record case to discover my own singles from before I left home in '73.

How many of these songs do you remember?

All I Really Want to Do by the Byrds (their cover of a Dylan song) with I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better on the B-side
My Back Pages by the Byrds (another Dylan cover) with Renaissance Fair on the flip side
American City Suite by Cashman and West (B: I Belong to You)
It's Getting Better by Mama Cass (B: Who's to Blame)
Color My World by Chicago (B: Make Me Smile)
We Can Fly by the Cowsills (B: A Time for Remembrance)
Jill by Gary Lewis (B: New in Town)

So far I remember all the A sides very well, and can even remember the words to some, but I don't remember any of the B sides at all.

The Joker Went Wild by Brian Hyland (B: I Can Hear the Rain)
Dear Eloise by The Hollies (B: When Your Lights Turned On)
Sometimes When We Touch by Dan Hill (B: Still Not Used To)
Dandy by Herman's Hermits (B: Your Reservation's Been Confirmed)
Simple Song of Freedom by Tim Hardin (B: Question of Birth)
I'm a Drifter by Bobby Goldsboro (B: Hoboes and Kings)
Ode to Billy Joe by Bobbie Gentry (B: Mississippi Delta)
Shape of Things to Come by Max Frost and the Troopers (B: Free Lovin')
A Little You by Freddie & the Dreamers (B: Things I'd Like to Say)
Atlantis by Donovan (B: To Susan on the West Coast Waiting - that's a B-side I do remember)
Mellow Yellow by Donovan (B: Sunny South Kensington)
Abraham, Martin and John by Dion (B: Daddy Rollin')
Making Love Out of Nothing At All by Air Supply (B: Late Again)
Nadia's Theme by Barry de Vorzon and Perry Botkin, Jr. (B: Down the Line)
Help Me by Kris Kristofferson (B: Why Me)
various speeches by President John F. Kennedy
Tupelo Mississippi Flash by Tom Jones (B: Daughter of Darkness)
The Impossible Dream by Jack Jones (B: My Best Girl)
Your Song by Elton John (B: Take Me To the Pilot)
White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane (B: Somebody to Love)
I Think We're Alone Now by Tommy James and the Shondells (B: Gone, Gone, Gone)
The Rapper by The Jaggerz (B: Born Poor)
Carmen by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (B: Love So Fine)
Who Will Answer? by Ed Ames (B: My Love is Gone From Me - I remember this one. Beautiful song, incredible voice.

Not much, the record itself is worth little, the sleeve maybe, depends upon the art work or design.

Very few are in their original paper sleeves - most are just in generic white sleeves, which probably devalues them somewhat. Honestly, I doubt whether any of them are worth more than a couple of dollars, if that, simply because things like records are so incredibly mass-produced - or were, back in the day. Many of the songs were at least minor hits in their day, which means they stamped out hundreds of thousands or even millions of them. I just looked up one title, 'Abraham, Martin and John', on eBay and there are over 200 listings, some for as little as $2.95.

There's a cool little store in Phoenix called 'Track in Wax' that has a sizeable warehouse of old records, and I've gone in there a couple of times looking for a particular 45. Once, it was 'Harlem Nocturne' by the Viscounts, and another time it was an obscure novelty song called 'It's Sister Jenny's Turn to Throw the Bomb' (actually the B-side of a minor hit for The Glencoves called 'Hootenanny'.) I don't think either one cost me more than five dollars.

I just found another small stack of records that were mine back in the day.

Something by the Beatles (B: Come Together)
The Battle Hymn of Lt. Calley by C Company featuring Terry Nelson (B: Routine Patrol)
Mama Told Me by Three Dog Night (B: Rock & Roll Widow)
Sonny by Bobby Hebb (B: Bread)
Classical Gas by Mason Williams (B: Long Time Blues)
The Fool on the Hill by Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, a Beatles cover (B: So Many Stars)
Gimme Dat Ding by The Pipkins (B: To Love You) If you ever heard this one, you HAVE to remember it!
The Ballad of the Green Berets by SSgt Barry Sadler (B: Letter from Vietnam)
1432 Franklin Pike Circle Hero by Bobby Russell (B: Let's Talk About Them) I could have sworn that was a Roger Miller song
Fire and Rain by James Taylor (B: Anywhere Like Heaven)

    These belonged to my dad.

San Quentin by Johnny Cash (B: A Boy Names Sue)
Green, Green Grass of Home by Tom Jones (B: If I Had You)
The Unicorn by the Irish Rovers (B: Black Velvet Band)
Ajax Liquor Store by Hudson and Landry (B: The Hippie and the Redneck)

Badfinger was a great group with so much potential. What happened to them was truly tragic.

I'm a big fan of '60s music, so I remember most of those. But I'm a little angry too, because some of those have me stumped.
