Exclamation May 4, 1970 - Remember Kent State

Full disclosure: I am a Kent State Alum '84. My freshman class was the first full class post-shooting.

R.I.P. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William Schroeder.

    Kent_State_massacre.jpg

The Kent State shootings, also known as the May 4 massacre and the Kent State massacre, were the killings of four and wounding of nine other unarmed Kent State University students by the Ohio National Guard on May 4, 1970 in Kent, Ohio, 40 mi (64 km) south of Cleveland. The killings took place during a peace rally opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into Cambodia by United States military forces as well as protesting the National Guard presence on campus. The incident marked the first time that a student had been killed in an anti-war gathering in United States history.

Twenty-eight National Guard soldiers fired approximately 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis. Students Allison Beth Krause, 19, Jeffrey Glenn Miller, 20, and Sandra Lee Scheuer, 20, died on the scene, while William Knox Schroeder, 19, was pronounced dead at Robinson Memorial Hospital in nearby Ravenna shortly afterward.

Krause and Miller were among the upward of 300 students who gathered to protest the expansion of the Cambodian Campaign, which President Richard Nixon had announced in an April 30 television address one week earlier. Scheuer and Schroeder were in the crowd of several hundred others who had been observing the proceedings at distances of more than 300 feet from the firing line; like most of the observers, they were watching the protest during a break between their classes.

The fatal shootings triggered immediate and massive outrage on campuses around the country. More than 4 million students participated in organized walk-outs at hundreds of universities, colleges and high schools, the largest student strike in the history of the United States at that time. The student strike of 1970 further affected public opinion at an already socially contentious time over the role of the United States in the Vietnam War.

Kent State was the result of at the time all National Guard were ill trained to the point they werent any better than a recent high school graduate. They were so ill trained that they fired 67 rds and a Huge group of amassed and grouped protesters and they only hit 13 times...thats how bad they were Thank God

Their leadership sucked to the point it had no control...when those students started throwing bottles and whatever else they could find at the soldiers their lack of training kicked right in and fear took over...when the students in a big group started to charge at the national guard, they disregarded orders and started firing

Only one thing that you might call good came out it...the military realized it HAD TO ENFORCE TRAINING for NG and revamp their entire program.

Im not condoning what happened, Im explaining from the other side of this incident

The students didn't charge the guard. The guard didn't fire b/c the students charged them. That's a myth that was put out by the NG shortly after the incident. Film and photo study dispelled all of that nonsense.

Dave with respect, I watched the entire kent state incident in a local bar, where we played chess and had chess tournaments, when kent state came on the TV we all watched it. Here is what I saw

I saw utterly untrained soldiers who were inept and their leadership was worse
When the camera panned to the students there was a huge crowd cramped in together like a solid mass.

The began to throw bottles and rocks at the NGsmen, most couldnt reach the guard and the screaming mass started running and throwing objects at the guard...the guard LOST IT, they were untrained and because of that there were very much afraid...and started firing out of 67 rds dave...67 should have hit for the benefit of the doubt 55...how can you miss a moving mass coming straight at you more than 60 yds wide...one of two things, most shot over their heads to scare them or shot into the ground...id suggest 3 of the NG were trying to shoot students....Keep in mind I am not trying to defend the guard or what they did...im telling you what I SAW

Right up until today all the times ive seen the incident, that scene is never shown...NEVER are the charging student throw objects ever shown....all the videos have been white washed and edited to show what they want them to show

Please listen, I watched the incident in real time as it unfolded and ive never seen what I saw that day again

No. It was their constitutional right to protest and assemble.

To me it sounds like a tragedy with blame on both sides, not unlike the Boston Massacre of 1770 when carefully examined.

My freshman class was the first full class post-shooting.
Meaning? The school reputation was marred that badly by the incident?
