The US Army has given a birthday cake to an Italian woman - to replace one that American soldiers stole from her as it cooled by a window 77 years ago. Meri Mion - who turns 90 on Friday - was 13 when her village of San Pietro, near Vicenza, saw fighting between US troops and German soldiers. Her mother made her a birthday cake, but it was taken by the opportunistic - and presumably hungry - Americans. The sun was shining in Giardini Salvi during the brief ceremony, where Gomlak spoke of the combat that occurred on nearby Corso San Felice e Fortunato. It was gray and stormy that morning when the 88th Infantry Division Soldiers battled German defenders. Several U.S. tanks were destroyed and at east 19 U.S. Soldiers were killed or wounded. Other Americans, from the 91st Infantry Division, drove north from the Riviera Berica into the city. Later, they paraded through Corso Palladio, icenza’s famous thoroughfare, where Italians offered them bread and wine.

Ms Mion said she would share the replacement cake with her relatives. "We will eat that dessert with all my family, remembering this wonderful day that I will never forget," she said.

When my flight crew went to France in the early '80s, elderly people, obviously old enough to have been around during WWII, used to come up to us on the sidewalks - they can spot an American a mile away, of course - pat us on the arm and smile, and sometimes say "Thank you", even though it must have been obvious to them that we were all born long after the war. As a country we have sometimes done things of which the world disapproved, but we've done the right thing often enough, and in big ways, that some people will always remember.

I believe that is the "new" Army green uniform. I think I read in 2020 the Army wanted to retrograde to WWII in looks.

That is the new Army Class A uniform. He is an American.
