In 2011, Oregon-based romance novelist Nancy Crampton Brophy penned a guest post on a writer’s blog titled How to Murder Your Husband. “As a romantic suspense writer, I spend a lot of time thinking about murder and, consequently, about police procedure,” Crampton Brophy wrote. “After all, if the murder is supposed to set me free, I certainly don’t want to spend any time in jail. And let me say clearly for the record, I don’t like jumpsuits and orange isn’t my color.” The 700-word piece was then split into sections detailing the pros and cons of “killing a villainous husband.” But in a plot twist that only rivals her own books, Crampton Brophy was arrested three months later and charged with her husband’s murder. The self-published romance novelist is currently standing trial, which opened on Monday 4 April 2022 in Portland. While the tongue-in-cheek essay serves as a major red flag to investigators, the trial judge has deemed it inadmissible as evidence—on the grounds that it could unfairly prejudice the jury.

The prosecution has alleged that Crampton Brophy killed her husband to benefit from a $1.5 million life insurance policy. “[Crampton Brophy] executed what she perhaps believed to be the perfect plan,” Shawn Overstreet, Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney, told the jury in the trial’s opening statements, as per The Oregonian. “All of the leads that detectives followed up with all pointed back at Nancy Brophy.” While there were no cameras inside the institute where her husband was shot, prosecutors argued Crampton Brophy was seen driving a minivan around the area on surveillance footage. This activity was registered between 6:39 am and 7:28 am on the day of the killing—Brophy arrived at the institute at 7:20 am. The authorities further discovered that Crampton Brophy had researched ‘ghost guns’, unserialised firearms that can be bought online and assembled at home, and had purchased a 9mm pistol at a gun show before her husband’s death.

Dave im guessing 30 yrs ago, there was a man and woman married who lived incredibly rurally, virtually alone with nothing and no one around them...Once a week the man would take his broken down pickup to town buy food and necessities and alot more booze where he got the money is a mystery...

He would daily get drunk and beat on his wife for recreation, this went on for decades...then finally he got sick they finally got an ambulance to take him to the hosp and he wound up in a wheel chair unable to stand.

When He got home the first thing he asked his wife was, your going to kill me, just take the shotgun and do it fast. She laughed and said im not going to kill you, im going to take care of you and make you live as long as you can...so I can beat you everyday like you did me and she commenced to beat his ass...and she beat him everyday until he died 4 yrs later

I loved it when I read it...if theres a true example off poetic justice thats it

They must have more hard evidence than just her writings.

Maybe she did it. Maybe she didn't.

I wonder if it's normal to suspect crime writers when someone near them dies?

    LOL

My husband has a cousin--little teeny thing--and her former husband used to hit her. One night when he was asleep (maybe drunk), she rolled him in a bed sheet and beat him with a bat. She went to prison for a short while and now she's one of the more successful real estate agents in Texas.

    Life is odd.

    Moral of the story.
When it is just you and your wife then don't get a 1.5 million dollar life insurance policy unless your marriage is in a good place. Else, leave it to your mistress as revenge.

She did it and happily admitted it to law enforcement, they never charged her....like you said, they said no evidence, they knew

Her case is being tried right now. The confession, supposedly, was told to a cellmate.

It doesn't really sound as though they have much against her.
