Exclamation The record-breaking dive under the Arctic ice

In 1958, a US submarine became the first vessel to reach the North Pole – by travelling under the ice. Its mission unlocked a whole new world for scientists to explore.

On 3 August 1958, the commander of the world's first nuclear submarine made an extraordinary, if somewhat tongue in cheek, entry in his logbook: "Embarked following personage at North Pole…" wrote USS Nautilus commander William Anderson, "…Santa Claus, affiliation: Christmas."

It was the final sentence of a celebratory record of the first crossing of the North Pole by any ship under its own power, a top-secret mission codenamed 'Operation Sunshine'. The transit took place with the 97-metre-long (319ft) submarine and its 116 crew (it's not clear in the logbook if that includes Santa) entirely submerged under the ice, a feat impossible before the invention of compact nuclear-powered propulsion.

As Anderson announced to his crew: "For the world, our country, and the navy – the North Pole."

I think this is one of my top 3 favorite submarine stories. Sorry no link, I have no link because I C&P'd it from another site...

During a test dive in 1920, the submarine USS S-20 sank in 180 feet of water after the forward torpedo room flooded. The crew determined that there was enough buoyancy in the rest of the boat to allow the stern to reach the surface so they could cut their way out of the hull, so they blew the ballast tanks, which resulted in the submarine coming to rest with her bow pointing straight down into the seabed and her stern sticking 17 feet up above the surface. After 36 hours, the crew was able to cut a small hole in the hull.

By this time, a passing ship spotted the stern of the submarine sticking out of the water and came to investigate what it was. Following maritime protocol, the two vessels exchanged the following messages:

    "What ship?"
    "S-5."
    "What nationality?"
    "American."
    "Where bound?"
    "Hell by compass."

After several more hours of cutting, all hands aboard S-5 were successfully rescued.

1968 Spy Thriller probably based on this true story.

They had to use a sub to break through the artic ice to get to our people before the Russians did!

My last deployment was to a joint base ran by the Air Force. Really a different life than the Army.

James Cameron is the man! I am surprised this story has not gotten more play. First man to solo dive to the Mariana Trench.

A great story about the technology needed and the risk he was at doing this. Here is Documentary if you have not seen it. Long video of course, but well worth a watch when you have time.

The depth of the ocean is fascinating. We know so little about what is down there!

PS. No disrespect meant to Barrack Obama, he of course knows. I am talking regular scientists and people don't know..
