The immediate issue is the defense of Taiwan. And of course, keeping the trade routes open. To do those two tasks we have to defeat China's anti-access, area denial capabilities in and near the China seas.

It is a hard problem.

For some time I have believed China will blockade Taiwan, allowing only what they want to enter and leave the island. A couple of days ago one of the top Chinese economic guys said if the US tries offensive economic war against China then China should cut off access to computer chips. A blockade can do that.

How do we defeat a Chinese blockade? Upon the sinking of the first Chinese ship we are in a kinetic war. We tend to keep our aircraft carriers far away.

The first time we use a submarine to sink Chinese ships in the China seas we risk losing them. But that is what they are for, among other things.
