    Art Bell

On most evenings at 11:00 PM I sit on my porch, smoking my pipe (tabacco) and listen to the talk shows. On Saturdays the only thing on is Conspiracy Theorist Art Bell, who is a a true wackaboo. Mr Bell was a firm believer in alien visitation, ghost, mythical creatures roaming the earth and all things paranormal. Mr Bell took his own life in 2018. I think its rather appropriate that he is still on the radio 4 years later since he was a confirmed believer in the dead walking among us.

Frankly, I think he makes as much sense dead as most of the mainstream media does about Donald Trump stories.

Coast To Coast AM was a great radio show. He hit on a great formula and kept with it for a long time, perfect for the audience awake at those times of the night; stoners and truck drivers were never the same after he started that show. I don't think he really believed in all that stuff; as a broadcaster he just knew propaganda techniques and how to use them in media.

Art Bell is dead. C2C continues with George Noory and several guest hosts. Paranormal and aliens is still the main theme, but there are a lot of "straight" interviews added in.

The old program I listen to is called "Somewhere in Time" since its repeats of 20 plus year old shows. Coast to Coast comes on around 1:00 AM here and I have never heard it. I listen to Ben Shapiro from 11 to 12 or 12:30 and them that's it for the day. If you have never listened to Shapiro its best to tape it and then run it back at 3/4 speed. He speaks so fast he can cram two hours into a 45 minute show!!

I enjoyed listening to Art Bell back in the day. Something about his voice, and the calm, articulate and professional way he spoke with his guests, however off-the-wall their stories were. There was at least one earlier radio show host who would regularly interview members of the woo-woo brigade; John Nebel had a show like that from the mid-50s until his death in '78. Joe Pyne may have been, in the early '50s, the first radio host to actually put callers on the air, in Kenosha, Wisconsin in the early '50s. I don't know whether he interviewed the flying saucer crowd on his radio show, but he would occasionally have guests like that on his syndicated t.v. show, which I used to watch as a kid in the '60s. Unlike Bell, Joe Pyne would express his skepticism rather forcefully and none too politely.

Pyne wasn't on the air around here long back in the day, but I remember his interview with Abbie Hoffman was fricking hilarious stuff; I thought he was going to start punching Hoffman any second as I was watching it. He was an ex-jarhead iirc, very old school hothead. He's had several imitators; I think that Michael Savage guy used him as a role model.

I remember watching Pyne interview Satanist Anton LaVey. And I've never seen it - not even sure if a video of it survives - but he interviewed Frank Zappa in 1966 and began the interview by saying to Frank, "So I guess your long hair makes you a woman". To which Zappa replied, "So I guess your wooden leg makes you a table".

Today Zappa would say "I don't know, I'm a musician, not a biologist"
