    Valerian Steel?

Archeologists Baffled by Mysterious Viking Sword Made of ‘Crucible Steel’ 800 Years Before It Was Invented

The famed Ulfberht Viking swords were made of metal so pure it baffled archaeologists. It was thought the technology to forge such metal was not invented for another 800 or more years, during the Industrial Revolution.About 170 Ulfberhts have been found, dating from A.D. 800 to 1,000. A Nova National Geographic documentary titled “Secrets of the Viking Sword,” first aired in 2012, took a look at the enigmatic sword’s metallurgic composition.

I wonder what is west of Westeros?

"He commented that the Ulfberht maker would have been regarded as possessing magical powers. “To be able to make a weapon from dirt is a pretty powerful thing,” he said. But, to make a weapon that could bend without breaking, stay so sharp, and weigh so little would be regarded as supernatural."

I wonder if it glows in the presence of Orcs?

I know that a great deal of people seem to think that the japanese sword smiths are the best of the best in the contemporary era. While some mighty fine work was done over there.

It doesn't hold a candle compared to the european side of the house. Simply put, europeans were an iron rich culture due to location whereas japan was an iron poor culture. Europeans could afford to do a great deal more experimentation that their oriental counterparts.

Scandinavian/germanic metallurgy was the king of that era as far as metal working was involved. Beautiful craftsmanship as well.

I am not sure. Had you used a Lord of the Rings reference of Middle Earth, I would say North America is to the West.

    That came later.

Valerian steel in Game of Thrones sounded much like this steel.

Norway has plenty of Soapstone, which has a very high melt point and is very stable.
Maybe it actually was crucible steel.
    Let's go Brandon !!!
