The birds show up every morning, they know the feeders are filled in the morning......I also have a couple of the suet feeders, that hold those suet cakes, I buy a variety box from Tractor Supply, they like the nut and fruit ones the best.

We have a cardinal family this year as well. Mom , dad , daughter and I think a son although I have not seen dad and son together, where I have seen mom and daughter together.

At our old house, before we started keeping all the cats indoors, we had a large, long-haired Siamese mix who used to like to walk along the top of the block wall in the back yard, like she was patrolling the perimeter of her kingdom. One day a pair of nesting mockingbirds began dive-bombing her as she walked along, actually hitting her pretty hard. At first she would yell at them, but then she just got quiet and seemed to be ignoring their attacks. She jumped over to the roof of the shed and just lay there, continuing to get dive-bombed. I said, "She's going to get that bird. She's just getting the timing down", but the wife said, "No, mockingbirds are too fast, she'll never catch it". I eventually went out and rescued The Princess, as we called her, before she lost an eye or something, but I'm convinced that given time she'd have snatched that bird right out of the air.

I went to my parents house for lunch, and as I looked out the kitchen window at the empty (but for an inch of seed on the bottom) bird feeder, I noticed the back end of a non-moving Purple Finch sticking out of the bottom row of holes. Thinking it was deceased, and not wanting my Mom to see it, I went to the feeder, unscrewed the bottom, and started to scrape out the seed, as soon as I reached the head, the little Finch popped it's head out of the hole and took off like it was on fire, not so much as a thank you LOL.

A thread about the birds. We have a family of Cardinals lining in the neighborhood this summer and a fair sampling of more mundane species from Chicadee to Blue Jay and Sparrows.
I've been feeding them but not over doing it so it doesn't encourage the squirrels/chipmonks.
But sometimes the feeders get low and it feels for all the world like the birds are waiting for me, rather impatiently, to feed them. I step outside and they are just there, getting close and even making some noise
    Am I crazy?
This year, the squirrels and chippies have to stand in line behind the Black Bears, authorities have been warning folks to stop feeding the birds, for now, because of them.

We have a full range of birds, blue birds, cardinals, sparrows, finches, wrens, plus. And then there are the eagles and hawks. We have a feeder, but also scatter seed on the handrail and deck for the pigeons (we call them The Cleanup Crew). While Hoover the cat just watches from his chair on the deck... with three legs, he's just not fast enough to threatened them.

Ms. Wren found her way into the house through the basement door being left open, and went up to the second floor and started nesting in a snake plant I have up there. She was doing a heck of a build! She's built nests all over the deck outside through the years, but that was a first for inside.

We have out hummers too, three feeders, no waiting! It's quiet right now while the baby hummers are getting their wings, but come August, the territory wars start and it's almost dangerous being out on the deck, you'll get your hair parted when they 'buzz the tower'. Hip checks and body slams so hard you can actually hear them. They come back year after year.

The couple that live next to my work have a large garden area surrounded by multiple feeders, plus a "living hedge" filled with literally dozens of nesting sparrows. Right in the middle of all the action, they have a wire mesh, rectangle "cat condo" as I like to call it, about 5 x 5 x 2.5, carpet on the bottom, three carpeted "perching" levels on the short sides, and a solid roof if it drizzles. They are both inside cats, but boy do they seem to appreciate the show, and the birds know they are not a threat, so they tease the cats mercilessly. So entertaining for me when I'm out working in the yard.

When a bear comes on the property he can eat whatever he wants. I might even give up a nice fish to one. LOL
