There was no “settled law” as far as abortion is concerned. In 1973 the Supreme Court wrongly took an issue away from the states. Recently that issue was placed back in the hands of each state where it belongs.
The Democrats had absolute power many times since 1973 to codify Roe vs Wade into constitutionally compatible law. They failed to do so. Now the states will work it out for themselves.

I can see why democrats/liberals would think so but if you look at the 14th I think you will see how iffy the 73 court's rulings was. It's a short document, unlike our modern laws sometimes a thousand pages long.
I have asked several people upset with the SC ruling in June, to do that and get back to me and none have.
I think it might make for an interesting discussion.
