How the anti-aging industry turns you into a customer for life...

In late June, I sat in on a five years ago to axe the term “anti-aging” from its pages. “How are you going to be anti-living?” she asked.

The takeaway of the panel, hosted by the Aspen Institute, was supposed to be that women should demand to be seen, regardless of how old they are, and that society needs to accept all versions of beauty, no matter someone’s birth date. But some mild discomfort with the premise was evident. Christie Brinkley mentioned a specific wrinkle that bothers her multiple times and the steps she’s taken to minimize it. All of the panelists acknowledged at least the temptation to get some work done, and the conundrum that you’re “shamed if you do, shamed if you don’t,” as Porizkova put it. I left thinking it’s probably time to start looking into fillers.

We’ve learned to pretend to celebrate older women, but we haven’t learned to accept what happens naturally to their skin. We celebrate older women but not the un-intervened-upon face. This fuels a multibillion-dollar cosmetic and skin care industry dedicated to helping people — mainly women — stay young, or rather, try to look like it. According to data from Euromonitor International, the anti-aging market grew from $3.9 billion in 2016 to $4.9 billion in 2021 in the United States alone. The global anti-aging market went from $25 billion to nearly $37 billion during the same period. . . Dermatologists say that a lot of this stuff is a scam anyway and doesn’t work . . .

Same business model Big Pharma uses for most of its products that manage symptoms and don't touch the cause. More profit in a long life sick than in curing the disease.

One supplement that seems to be popular now is collagen. There's still debate about whether it helps or not.

It helps to have good genes and to stay out of the sun beyond healthy benefits.

I shop for groceries on Thursdays. I always buy one or two bottles of wine. It is fun to watch the check out clerk wrestle with the decision to card me as their policy is to card everyone aged 40 and below. I am 69 but have all my hair and have almost no gray.

Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

Does this wrinkle make my ass look big?

I don't buy alcohol for me, but do on occasion buy a bottle as a house gift. I'm 61, with salt and pepper gray hair. I may not look my actual age (good genes), but there is no way someone is going to mistake me for under 40. I have gotten carded, but not every time. I laugh when the ask and thier face turns red.

I have almost no wrinkles on my face or neck.

For me I have always looked far younger than my chronological age.

I have few wrinkles also, though the frown lines are also hereditary for me.

Eating decently, minimal sun exposure without protection, and good genes help.

The research suggests limited benefits. The only way I use it is as bone broth.

I am 52 and have been carded (the only grey is in my beard, and if I am shaved I look a lot younger than 52).
